Celebrate the season of Advent with your kids with this bright and beautiful Advent Wreath Art Project and special picture book tie-in! Great for ages 3-8.
This is the Christmas Story by Kids Read Truth is such a beautiful Scripture-based book to share with your kids, especially during the season of Advent because it helps children see the BIG picture of God’s plan for the birth of His Son.
The text is simple enough for children to understand and the illustrations are so precious… definitely will be doing some more art inspired by this book in the future!
*Side note: The book includes Scripture along with the child-friendly text… it is not from a Catholic Bible. If you’d like your children to hear it read from a Catholic Bible, just have yours handy. 😊
Here is a look into the book and art project tutorial:
Here is what we used:
- 9″ x 12″ black paper for the background
(larger templates included if you’d like to use 12″ x 18″ for a larger wreath)
- Candle templates printed onto card stock (download FREE templates below)
- Green paper (painted or plain light & dark green)
- Shimmer dot markers OR paint sticks OR markers OR crayons
- Oil pastels OR crayons

Print the templates onto card stock. White card stock is a great surface to use dot markers on because the colors remain so bright!
Set aside to dry for a few minutes before you cut.
Stack a few green paper squares (mine are cut into 6″ x 6″ squares), and draw an organic leaf shape filling a lot of the space. Cut the shape. Stacking the papers and cutting once saves a lot of time!
Using oil pastels or crayons, add veins or patterns to the leaves in bright colors.
Cut the candles and flames out and glue them to the black background first.
Then glue the leaves overlapping the candles slightly.
And you’re left with bright and colorful (and shimmery!) Advent Wreath Art for Kids to celebrate the season with your little ones.
